History of the Kemyel Lofts of Douglas McClary
I left home in 1955 to commence work in the Police Service and although with the help of my parents I kept the birds for some time, I eventually had to dispose of my little stud.
In 1962 I married and the following year was given the tenancy of a house with garden. Thoughts were immediately directed to keeping pigeons again. I ordered a copy of The Racing Pigeon and waited for its delivery with great impatience. When I finally studied it, there on the front page was a picture of Rosa Belle , Mr A.R.Brown s famous winner and which was best opposite sex at the Old Comrades show. In the same edition there appeared an advertisement for show racers and from it I purchased a mealy cock for stock and a young blue hen, as well as a six bird wicker show basket. These were delivered before I had a loft and were housed in a local racing fancier s loft. I started corresponding with Mr Brown who sold me a mealy cock and a blue white flight hen (a winner of best opposite sex at the Royal Dairy show for him) and we formed a friendship which lasted for many years until his death.
The A.R.Brown powder blues were based upon the birds of C.R.Snow of Southsea and Maurice Crossland and were absolutely breathtaking. My original birds from him are still the base of my present family for my near-obsession with the powder blue colour has kept the family line going and I can trace my present powders back through my comprehensive records.
Nowadays I keep a variety of colours in the show racer including chequers, mealies, opal mosaics and reds, but with the rarer colours now being enjoyed - though kept separate, including cream bars, yellow chequers, silver chequers and bars and the lavenders. Throughout the years there have been notable introductions from Harry King of Treherbert, Wales, Bill Jackson of London, Tommy Jones of Hornchurch, John Robilliard of Bodmin and from the Speddings of Cumbria.
I still show but not as seriously as in the earlier years. I enjoy showing but enjoy keeping my birds for my own pleasure and relaxation. I enjoy just as much judging, the breeding, the writing and being of service to the sport. I also enjoy racing pigeons and have done this for many years using a separate race team. Although show racers are still my main interest, I also keep and enjoy other breeds of pigeon.
Oh yes! The name Kemyel comes from an area of Cornwall including Kemyel Farm where I spent so many enjoyable days and hours in my boyhood. Kemyel is situated on the roads and byways between Mousehole and Lamorna Cove.
